Retirement

One reality of the recession is that pensions and retirement savings have significantly declined in value.  As such, many who were planning on retiring have opted to keep working to ensure financial stability.

These employees who are choosing to stay longer can often be a burden to employers because the employees don’t want to be there anymore.  This results in:

  • decreased morale
  • negative attitudes
  • lowered productivity
  • disengagement from responsibilities
  • older workforces
  • fewer opportunities for younger staff

The key to maintaining a balanced and enjoyable workplace lies in engaging employees who lose touch.  One way to do this is to change job responsibilities, routines, or other aspects that may have the employee feeling stuck.

For those to whom this situation is resonating quite clearly, you have options.  Below is a link to an article providing a real life example of how the things could play out if you retire as planned versus working a few years longer.
