What's New?
Drive Through H1N1 Virus Testing

Stanford University has recently debuted a new method of testing and treating patients who might have the H1N1 virus. This new method is much like the drive through at a fast food chain - patients drive up and roll down their windows, but have doctors and nurses greet them rather than a burger and fries.

Staff can take temperatures, test blood pressure, and much more, much like a simplified physical exam. Vehicles proceed through registration, triage, screening, and pharmacy stations for complete care. If necessary, doctors can keep the patient for observation, or even refer the patient to the emergency room from there.

There are two key benefits to this system:

  • Patients stay in their cars and prevent the spread of illness
  • Prevent overcrowding in emergency rooms

This new means of treatment is quick, safe, and uses resources efficiently. In light of the recent H1N1 outbreak, this is a great new means of treating people during a pandemic. For more information, visit Stanford's website:

Recruitment

Recruitment is always an important issue for EMS agencies. Some agencies are always under staffed, some cant recruit qualified and suitable applicants, some have to make tough choices between great candidates, and some have other unique issues finding and retaining the volunteers and workers they need.

The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) has come up with a unique solution to its staffing challenge which they recently launched. FDNY staff put together a video that combines the appealing aspects of Fire Fighting with the popularity of rap music. To watch the video, follow this link:

The video has received plenty of media coverage, appearing in JEMS, all over the news, and also on YouTube garnering over 13,000 views to date! Overall the feedback for this clip has been positive and supportive.
